Living under grace as believers means we’re God’s children. As our heavenly Father, He loves us enough to chasten and correct us as needed. It’s painful while we’re going through it, but it isn’t punishment; chastening is a sign that we’re God’s son or daughter. It’s God’s way of dealing with our sins, but doing so in love. We’re unlike the unsaved world that doesn’t know Jesus and therefore doesn’t undergo the chastening process; we therefore can rejoice when we undergo it.

There’s considerable misunderstanding about what it means when God chastens us. He does this as a loving Father to correct and guide us, not to punish us. His chastening helps direct us toward righteousness, godliness, and complete dependence on Him. We’re guaranteed to encounter adversity and painful circumstances in life; God uses those things not because He’s angry with us, but to grow and mature us.
