Filmmaker and philanthropist Tyler Perry has provided a $100,000 donation to Bishop Marvin Winans' Perfecting Church in Detroit, following a viral controversy over a public exchange during the church's annual fundraising effort.
The situation originated on October 19 during Perfecting Church's "Day of Giving." Bishop Winans asked congregants to present an offering of "$1,000 plus one," a phrase that led to confusion—some members believed it meant $1,001, while others understood it as two separate $1,000 gifts.
In the midst of the collection, longtime member Roberta McCoy approached the pulpit with a $1,235 donation, which she described as an act of faith. Rather than simply accepting the money, Bishop Marvin Winans corrected her in front of the congregation.

Clips of the interaction quickly circulated online, leading to widespread criticism that the Bishop had publicly embarrassed a congregant over the size of her offering.
Bishop Winans and McCoy has since clarified that the clip was misinterpreted and taken out of context. McCoy explained: "He absolutely did not rebuke me. There was a correction, because pastor gave instruction on the lines to get into," suggesting the issue was about following a specific procedure for giving, not the amount itself.
Perry's substantial six-figure contribution, arrived as a major show of support for the Bishop and the congregation amid the public scrutiny.
Perfecting Church has been actively fundraising for a new building, and Perry's gift helps to bolster the ministry's goal during a challenging period.
